Welcome to Sunbreak Nursery!
We are a family owned and operated business located in Bellingham, Washington. Our greenhouses are situated about 15 miles south of the Canadian border and 90 miles north of Seattle. The nursery has been in continuous operation for more than 40 years.

Our specialty crops are ground covers and ferns. Our plant list includes more than 150 varieties of ground covers and 20 types of hardy ferns. Our customers include more than two dozen retailgarden centers, and many landscape contractors, architects, and government agencies. Over the years, we have introduced many new plants which have become common in the Northwest nursery industry.

The majority of our plants are produced in efficiently managed Dutch greenhouses
which we imported from Holland twenty years ago.
Our plants are grown on raised rolling benches with bottom heat. We have found, from long experience, that plants which are grown on raised benches are superior in quality to plants grown on the ground. This is because routine maintenance such as weeding, pruning, and pest control can be accomplished more easily at a comfortable height. Our greenhouses are naturally ventilated using both ridge and side vents. Horizontal air flow fans maintain a constant stream of air across plant foliage. We consistently monitor for disease, insects, and other pests and we use a professional Integrated Pest Management service to help us monitor and control problems which may arise.

To help maintain consistent plant quality, we have invested heavily in soil mixing equipment which allows us to custom blend specific soil mixes. We have learned that “one size fits all” soil mixes are not the answer when growing a wide range of crops. We use peat moss as a key ingredient in most of our mixes because of its ability to retain moisture which lessens the need for watering and reduces foliar disease. Peat moss also increases soil acidity thus making certain micro-nutrients more readily available for plant growth. Another key component in our soil mixes is slow-release fertilizer. Although costly, this fertilizer provides ample nutrition for good customer shelf life and subsequent plant establishment in landscapes.
